About the Heyrod Contest

Heyrod is a village situated on the A635 (Wakefield Rd) between Stalybridge and Mossley.

The Whit Friday Brass Band Contest is a major event in the Heyrod calendar and is a very popular event supported by all ages within the community.

The first Heyrod Contest took place in 1984, and has continued every year since. It was first arranged in memory of Ted Jones who for many years was involved with Stalybridge Brass. Following the death of Ted, his daughter Alwyn and son-in-law Lawrence Clayton were inspired to start a contest in his memory, and there was no better place to do this than Ted’s home village of Heyrod.

Coaches park on the main road under the direction of stewards, but unfortunately limited space means that Heyrod is not able to accommodate coaches whilst drivers are taking their break. After booking in bands take position for the deportment section, which takes place along John St. They then take their place outside the Village Hall to play their competition piece.

During the competition, which is open from 4.30-11.00pm, the village bar is open and offers a selection of real ales. Hot food and drinks are also available.

Many bands return to Heyrod year after year. We look forward to seeing our old friends again on the night, and offer a warm welcome to new visitors.
